An Associate Professor of Christian Education at Yale University Divinity School, Dr. Smith is a popular lecturer within the academy as well as in congregational settings. The Seminary is delighted to welcome her to campus. Smith's professional affiliations include: the Religious Education Association where she is the 2012 program chair and president elect, the American Academy of Religion, the Association of Practical Theology, and the Pan African Scholars in Religious Education in which she serves as chairperson.

Smith graduated from Arizona State University with B.A.E. and M.Ed. degrees in Special Education. She completed the M.Div. at the School of Theology – Virginia Union University and a Ph.D. at Claremont School of Theology with a dissertation titled “Preserving Faith and Culture in the African American Church: A Tri-Collaborative Model for Teaching the Triple-Heritage through the African American Spirituals.” Smith’s book, Reclaiming the Spirituals: New Possibilities for African American Christian Education has enriched the literature in religious education and helped to foster a womanist perspective in the discipline. She is presently completing Great Prayers of the New Testament: Contemplative Practices through Christian Education with John Knox Press and Women’s Spirituality and Education in the Black Church with Palgrave Macmillan Press.
