Composting Do's and Don'ts

“Green” materials
*Fresh leaves, plant cuttings and weeds
*Grass clippings
*Fruit and vegetable peels and other fruit wastes
*Coffee grounds and tea bags

“Brown” materials
*Dead weeds and dry leaves
*Clipped brush
*Wood ash
*Egg shells
*Wood chips

What NOT to include in the composter:

  • Meat, fish, poultry, bones, dairy products
  • Foods containing animal fats, human/pet feces
  • Cheese, salad dressing, oils and other fats (can cause odors and attract animals)
  • Plant material with visible signs of disease or insect infestation
  • Weeds that can easily grow from root or stem cuttings
