LTSG HOME ---- DAILY REDACTOR ---- EVENT CALENDAR

Receiving Communion Today

“Believing in the real presence of Christ, this church practices eucharistic hospitality. All baptized persons are welcomed to Communion when they are visiting in the congregations of this church.” (from the ELCA’s sacramental practices statement)

We'll be receiving the sacrament at stations today. Simply come forward by the center aisle (in two lines), receive the bread from the person in the center, then  go to the side to receive the wine from a common cup or pouring chalice.
As a sign of the unity the sacrament gives, we all share the same elements. If you are unable to receive wheat bread or wine, be sure that in a single element you receive the Presence and all the gifts of the sacrament.
If you are not prepared to receive the elements today, but would like to come forward for a blessing, bring a copy of the bulletin with you -- that'll be the sign of your intention for the distributors.

Wine Given

Wine for Holy Communion is provided at significantly reduced cost by Allegro Vineyards of Brogue, Pennsylvania.

Give Bread?

Bread for Holy Communion is often donated by members of the community. Simply sign up on the list in the back of the chapel, and bring the elements to the sacristy before the service. Sacristans will be glad to offer advice about amounts

Prayerful Reading of Scripture

One of Luther’s great sources of insight and energy was his daily disciple of meditating on scripture -- his version of the monastic practice of lectio divina. Anyone who appears in Valentine 311 at 8 AM on Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday will be able to use that discipline, focusing each day on one of the readings for the next Sunday.

Assisting Minister Training

Interested in serving as an assisting minister at a weekly Eucharist? Interested in knowing what you might need in order to do that? Pr. Oldenburg will be offering the answers to some of that today from 1:40 to 2:10  in the chapel. He’ll let presiders know who has been through this training (and therefore would be good and interested candidates for assisting minister gigs). See him for more information, or simply show up!

Childrens Choir Director
Anyone qualified and interested in applying for the paid position of Seminary children's choir director should send a letter of interest spelling out experience and training in children's choir work to Dr. Folkemer at sfolkemer@Ltsg.edu.

Today's Offering

An offering is received at every service of Holy Communion at the chapel, and is given (at the direction of the Worship, Music, and Arts Committee) to an agency or cause outside the seminary community. While that committee won’t be constituted until September, it will be asked to designate offerings from August and September to Lutheran Disaster Response, aimed at providing relief to those suffering from the flooding in Pakistan and other natural disasters.

 Intercessions

On the bulletin board in the back of the chapel is a sheet asking for intercessory prayers. Assisting ministers will take this list down on Wednesdays for inclusion in the prayers of the church at our weekly Communion service. You might want to put people or causes for which the community might pray on that list at any time, and check it regularly for your own prayer life!

For Whom Else Are We Praying?
Along with intercessions for the people on that list, there are a number of prayers we offer regularly in chapel. In the prayers of the church each Wednesday, we remember several interns and their families. On Tuesdays, we include a partner in the Washington Theological Consortium or the Eastern Cluster of Lutheran Seminaries. On Thursdays, we thank God for the continuing ministry of several alums by name.

 Singers Needed

Experienced and brand new singers are always needed and welcome in the Seminary Choir and the Motet Choir. The Seminary Choir rehearses Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:50pm-1:25pm. The first rehearsal is Tues, Sept. 7. Commuters or others with schedule issues may still participate as long as you can make at least two rehearsals each week. The Motet Choir rehearses Wednesdays from 6:15pm-7:45pm. The first rehearsal is Wed., Sept. 8. Course credit is available for singing in either choir.  Contact Dr. Folkemer at sfolkemer@ltsg.edu for more information.

 Call for Instrumentalists
There are a plethora of opportunities for people with musical gifts to put them into the service of the community. For instance:
  • At least two choirs of seminarians and other members of the community provide leadership for Communion services (one for noontime services, another for evening services).
  • Instrumental groups provide support for settings which use folk, soft rock, Latino, and African-American styles.
  • The Brass Group enlivens festival services – and other instrumentalists are always welcome, too.
  • Keyboardists are welcome to spell our regular organist and pianist.
If you’re interested in any of these (or if you know someone who should be!), please see Mr. Folkemer

Save the Dates!

Every Monday-Thursday at 10 PM in the quad fountain (Heiges Common Room if raining)
Anyone interested is welcome to gather for Night Prayer. For more information, contact Daniel Clark at dclark@Ltsg.edu.

Sun., Sept. 12 6 PM at Christ Lutheran Church

Every Saturday, from 8 until 9 in the square in the center of Gettysburg
Producers from miles around bring their fruits, vegetables, baked goods, crafts, and sometime alpacas . An easy way to take advantage of the harvest of our area! An exception – on Sat., Sept. 25, the Farmers Market will be replaced by a huge antique festival, lining the blocks radiating from the square.

Sun., Sept. 12 4:00 PM in our chapel.
One of the musical treasures of the area – the Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra – will perform a concert, with special guest soprano Jessica Gondwe. Like all Music, Gettysburg! events, this performance is free and open to all.
